Jewelry Settings

If there is a cut stone in a jewelry store that you have been eyeing and you are looking forward to having it made into a particular jewelry item, you need to know about the perfect setting that will offset the beauty, colour and luster of the stone. Precious stones such as diamonds, ruby and jade will even be more stunning when they are set against a perfect backdrop. In the case of jewelry items, these take the form of jewelry settings.

In the jewelry making industry, there are a few basic types of jewelry settings that you can use to set off a precious or semi-precious piece of stone. The most popular type of jewelry setting is called Bezel, where a narrow strip of metal is attached halfway up the length of the stone to secure it in place. This is so that when the stone is viewed from the top, it is the stone which will be the highlight of the jewelry instead of the setting. For round diamonds, a new trend of jewelry setting is called the micro-setting, which is especially used for smaller stone pieces. In a channel setting, there are two metal walls which serve as the setting for smaller stones, but no metal is visible between the stones. This type of setting is particularly popular for baguette or square-shaped stones. Other types of settings include a prong type, bead set, pave setting and cluster setting. You can either buy a ready-made jewelry setting and place the stone yourself, or ask a jewelry maker to create the perfect setting for the precious stone that you would like to turn into a ring, a pair of earrings, or a necklace pendant.
